Who Was Saint Eleni?

Saint Eleni lived in the late 3rd and early 4th centuries AD and was the mother of Constantine the Great, the emperor who legalized Christianity in the Roman Empire. Despite her humble origins, she became a key figure in early Christianity, renowned for her piety and devotion.

Around 326 AD, Saint Eleni undertook a pilgrimage to the Holy Land, where she is traditionally credited with finding the True Cross upon which Jesus was crucified. She also commissioned the construction of churches at important Christian sites, including Jerusalem and Bethlehem, helping establish the early Christian sacred geography.

Saint Eleni is venerated in both the Eastern Orthodox Church and the Roman Catholic Church. She is celebrated as a model of faith, courage, and dedication to spreading Christianity. Her feast day is observed on May 21 in the Orthodox tradition.
