Who Was Saint Nektarios of Aegina?

Saint Nektarios of Aegina (1846–1920) was a Greek Orthodox bishop, theologian, and monastic known for his humility, holiness, and miracles. Born Anastasios Kephalas on the Greek island of Selymbria (modern Silivri, Turkey), he pursued religious studies and became a priest, later serving as bishop in the city of Pentapolis in Egypt.

He faced slander and persecution from jealous clergy, which forced him to resign, but he remained faithful to God’s calling. In 1904, he founded the Holy Monastery of Saint Nektarios on the island of Aegina, Greece, where he dedicated himself to prayer, teaching, and the care of nuns and pilgrims.

Saint Nektarios is remembered for his healing miracles, spiritual guidance, and deep humility. He was canonized by the Orthodox Church in 1961, and his feast day is celebrated on November 9. He is widely venerated as a protector, healer, and guide for those seeking faith, comfort, and intercession.
