Original Saint Marina Icon – 12 × 16 Inches
Saint Marina (Saint Margaret of Antioch) Icon – 12 × 16 Inches
Traditional Christian Religious Wall Icon
This 12 × 16 inch icon depicts Saint Marina, also known in the Western Christian tradition as Saint Margaret of Antioch, a widely venerated early Christian martyr. She is shown frontally with a calm and resolute expression, clothed in red garments symbolizing martyrdom. In her hand, she holds a cross, the traditional sign of her witness to the Christian faith and her suffering for it.
The gold background represents divine light and the heavenly kingdom, while the halo signifies holiness. The Greek inscription identifies her as Hagia Marina (“Saint Marina”). The icon follows the traditional Byzantine style, using symbolic color, simplified form, and deliberate lines intended to support prayer and contemplation rather than naturalistic portraiture.
Suitable for a home prayer corner, chapel, or devotional space, this icon honors a saint remembered for courage, faith, and steadfastness under persecution.
Who Was Saint Marina?
Saint Marina, also known in Western tradition as Saint Margaret of Antioch, is one of the most beloved early Christian martyrs. Born in the city of Antioch during the late 3rd or early 4th century, Marina was raised by a Christian mother after her pagan father abandoned the family. From a young age, she demonstrated a strong faith in Christ and a deep commitment to living a virtuous life.
As Christianity was still illegal under Roman rule, Marina’s faith put her at risk. When a Roman governor sought to force her to renounce Christianity and marry him, she refused. Because of her steadfast faith, she was arrested and subjected to severe torture. Legend tells that during her imprisonment, she faced demonic temptations and trials but remained spiritually strong, often depicted in iconography as victorious over these forces.
Despite suffering, Marina never wavered in her devotion. Her refusal to submit led to her execution, and she died as a martyr for the Christian faith. Her courage inspired many early Christians and established her as a powerful symbol of perseverance and divine protection.
Saint Marina’s veneration spread widely through both the Eastern Orthodox and Western Christian churches, where she is remembered as a protector of women in childbirth and a patron of those facing hardship. Her feast day is celebrated on July 17th in the Orthodox calendar.
